Dhaka
The capital of Bangladesh , has a fairly long history. It grew as an urban center in the Sutanate period and rose into prominence in the Mughal period when it enjoyed the position of a provincial capital. It was founded in 1608 AD. as the seat of the Mughal Viceroy of Bengal . Dhaka gained city status in 1947 when it was made the capital of East Pakistan . The importance of Dhaka increased after 1971, when it became the capital of independent Bangladesh . Total population of the city some 12 million people. It bears an exciting history and rich culture. Known all over the world as the city of mosques and muslin and rickshaws, it has attracted travelers from far and near through the ages.Modern Dhaka is the centre of political, cultural and economic life in Bangladesh. History of the Dhaka city is 400 years old.

The Shaheed MinarThe Shaheed Minar (Bengali: শহীদ মিনার Shohid Minar) is a national monument in Dhaka, Bangladesh, established to commemorate those killed during the Language Movement demonstrations of 1952. On February 21, 1952, dozens of students and political activists were killed when the Pakistani police force opened fire on Bengali protesters who were demanding equal status to their native tongue, Bangla.
University of Dhaka
Dhaka University, one of the oldest institutions for higher education in Bangladesh, has turned 90. Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose and Nobel laureate and founder of the Grameen bank Muhammed Yunus are among the famous alumni of the university.
Lalbagh FortIt
was built in 1678 A.D. by Prince Mohammad Azam,
son of Mughal emperor Aurangazeb. The fort was
the scene of bloody battle during the first war
of independence (1857) when 260 sepoys stationed
here backed by the people revolted against British
forces. Outstanding among the monuments of the
Lalbagh are the tomb of Pari Bibi , Lalbagh Mosque,
Audience Hall and Hammam of Nawab Shaista Khan
now housing a museum.
Ahsan ManzilOn the bank of river Buriganga in Dhaka the Pink majestic Ahsan Manzil has been renovated and turned into a museum recently. It is an epitome of the nation's rich cultural heritage. It is the home of Nawab of Dhaka and a silent spectator to many events.
Today's renovated Ahsan Manzil a monument of immense historical beauty. It has 31 rooms with a huge dome atop which can be seen from miles around. It now has 23 galleries in 31 rooms displaying of traits, furniture and household articles and utensils used by the Nawab. More Picture |
